Caccamo is a pleasant little town, at an altitude of 500 meters, whose origins are not absolutely certain. It has a beautiful Norman Cathedral with numerous sculptures by Francesco Laurana and paintings by Pietro Novelli and Vito D'Anna. But the most significant monument is the Castle, a typical fortified building with continuous curtain walls, bastion, battlements and towers which, majestically, are situated above the rock. Built by the Normans, possibly on the site of a pre-existing fortress, it is the most extraordinary and best preserved castle of the western Sicily.
In the centuries, it was altered many times: the windows and the balconies in the facade, testify to the various artistical styles. This castle became famous because of the plot of the Lord of Caccamo, Matteo Bonello, against the Norman king William II "the bad", to guarantee the interests of the barons.
