A small town 12 Km. from Palermo, about 25 minutes from the School, famous for its wonderful Norman cathedral, interely decorated with golden mosaics, and the splendid attigue cloister.
The Duomo rose up in a short time, between 1174 and 1176, at the behest of the Norman king William II. According to a legend, he had the cathedral built after an apparition of the Virgin Mary, who revealed to him the place in which a rich treasure was buried.
Islamic architects linked Fatimite art to Christian places of worship. The façade of the Duomo, is quite sober in style, closed between two square massive towers. But the true masterpiece is the interior mosaic decoration covering 6340 square metres. A wonderful ornamentation in Byzantine style whose value is unequalled in any other part of Italy.
The cloister, dates back to the same period. It was part of a Benedictine Abbey adjacent to the cathedral and has the same atmosphere of Muslim courtyards: the 228 twin columns, richly decorated with polycrome mosaics and reliefs, are surmounted by oval arches.
A real masterpiece of art which cannot be missed, during your holiday! |
